Wii Sports Resort Reviews
My family loves Wii Resort. We received this for Christmas and have played it countless times. The games are fun, challenging and my entire family (from the 4 year old to the adults) have a blast with this.
The only issue we have had with it is the Motion Remote goes a little batty sometimes - but it has a quick fix to calibrate it.
We were hopeful when we bought this that my 6 year old, who is the main user of the Wii, would be able to easily control and play the games. So far, we are not disappointed.
There are a few games that she has yet to master. Canoeing, for example, is beyond her grasp. But things like skydiving and bicycle races are really piquing her interest. She is loving basketball and archery. Even frisbee throwing!
So if you are considering this for a younger child, do it!
This is a far more satisfying game than Wii Sports was in my opinion, It advertises 12 sports on the front, but its really more than that, many of the sports listed have multiple game modes that use the same control scheme, but feel like other games in and of themselves, for instance the sword game has three modes: duel mode, speed slice mode, and showdown mode. Duel mode and show down mode feel like games in themselves while speed slice feels like a mini game one would find in a mario party game. Other highly satisfying modes include Golf which includes two 18 hole courses (far more than golf in Wii Sports), frisbee which includes a frisbee golf mode that uses the same courses as golf, Power cruising, which uses jet skis and feels like the old N64 and Gamecube games Wave Racer and it's sequel and includes 8 courses, table tennis which is like tennis from the original wii sports but feels more accurate thanks to the wii motion plus, and bowling which now includes two new interesting game play modes: 100 pin mode and spin control.
The other games in this set are a bit disappointing in how they seem to have been overlooked or feel incomplete when they were added using containing just one game play mode which often feels short or like a simple mini game more than a full game. For Instance, wake boarding is really fun to play in my opinion, but you really only get three courses and you only get to play them for a few minutes each and it makes it feel shorter than I would like. The archery mode has only one mode with 3 difficulty settings for a total of 4 targets in each difficulty making it feel more like a mini game and an after thought. Basketball has a 3 point contest mode and a pick-up game mode which is only playable after having played the three point contest and which also feels like a mini game as you can't control where your players move, you can only control which other player they pass the ball too and make shots with them. Cycling mode is like a hold over from Wii Fit plus and I think it works better in that game as in wii fit plus you actually use your feet to pedal, but in this version you move the remote and nun chuck up and down to pedal AND you have to steer with them as well making it a fairly awkward mode. Canoeing feels more like a Wii Fit mode than a Wii Sports mode as you have to physically row the boat with the remote as an oar which can be a bit of a work out, disappointingly enough the game only comes with 2 modes, a speed challenge mode and a race mode which uses the same single course. Then there is the Air sports mode which consist of skydiving, island flying and dogfight mode, Skydiving feels like nothing more than yet another minigame that last just a few minutes at a time and really isn't any sort of challenge, island flyover is barely a game and more of a toy with no real goal where you get a plane and can fly around the island for 5 minutes and rack up a score by either popping balloons or finding "points of Interest" scattered on the map, and finally it has dog fight mode which I have never played as for some reason its multiplayer only and I don't really feel like going out and buying another Wii motion plus at this time.
Wii Sports resort is the sequel to Wii Sports, and it is just as fun if not more fun. The problem is not only that there are repeat games from Wii Sports, but you are also required to have an accessory to the wiimote (the accessory is called the Wii Motion Plus), and you can't play the games without it. There are 12 main sports, and there are 2-3 versions of that sport, so you are basically getting about 25 games. The sports included are:
Swordplay-This is the most active of the games, as you hold the wiimote as a sword and swing it at your target. You can swing any way you want such as up to down, or right to left.
Wakeboarding-This is the sport when you are on a board, and you are holding onto a rope and being pulled behind a boat. You hold the wiimote horizonatlly in this game, and you yank it up in order to do tricks on top of waves.
Archery-This is basically using a bow and arrow to hit a target. You need the nunchuk for this game. You hold the nunchuk in the right hand (unless you are left-handed, then you hold it in the left), and you pull back the nunchuk, holding onto the z button. You release the z button when you want to release the arrow.
Frisbee-You hold the wiimote like you would a frisbee, and you make the motion of tossing a frisbee in the direction you want it to go. You might want to make sure you have the wrist strap on while playing this game.
Basketball-You don't dribble, you just shoot and run. Really, the only way the wiimote is used is when you shoot, you throw the wiimote like you would a ball. . .but only in one hand.
Power Cruising-This sport is basically riding a motorcycle on water. You need the nunchuk for this game, and you hold both it and the wiimote like you would hold on to handlebars. You twist the wiimote in order to accelerate.
Cycling-This is bike riding. You need the nunchuk, and you hold both it and the wiimote vertically. Then you alternate swinging them upward as if you were pedaling your bike with your hands. You have to watch your stamina, though, and don't tire out.
Golf-This is exactly the same thing for Wii Sports, only it has different greens (different courses). You hold the wiimote down like a golf club and make the action of swinging it.
Table Tennis-This is much like tennis, only you are playing it on a table. You swing the wiimote in order to hit the ping-pong ball back to your opponent.
Bowling-Almost exactly like the Wii Sports verion, this game has one big difference. Like a real bowling ball, it twists dramatically with your wrist. You really have to focus on keeping the ball straight, which makes it a bit harder than the original game for Wii Sports.
Canoeing-In this game you paddle a set course by using the wiimote like you would a paddle. You paddle on the opposite side of the direction you want to go just like real canoeing.
Air Sports-These games are really easy to do, and they only require you to hold the wiimote and aim it. The sports included are skydiving, island flyover, and dogfight.
These games are really fun, but it is a huge letdown that you cannot play against others unless you buy another Wii Motion Plus accessory. Also, I do not see why they put golf, table tennis, and bowling in the game when they had them in previous games. Although it does have a few minor flaws, this is still a great game that you will love if you like Wii Sports.
I am having so much fun with these games. 4i days in a row and I am not at all bored. I use this in conjunction with wii fit plus, wii fit allows you to add in any extra activities you are doing and get a calorie burning count and credit for extra workouts. I am using the Sport Resort after meals to keep my blood sugar in check, it should be a diabetic treatment it works so well. I love the bike riding, no problem "peddling" with my arms, it is a really good workout and I wouldn't be out peddling a bike the real way. I am getting fantastic at Frisbee Golf and bowling, the only thing I don't like is the sword playing, just a bit of wild thrashing with the wiimote and the opponent is off the platform, no fun. I recommend this to anyone who does not get a lot of exercise for whatever reason, age, illness, back problems or snowy winter weather, it is fun and it is the best Christmas present I have gotten in ages. The new motion remote is great and seems to work well with the original sports.
