The system performs Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel audio decoding for enveloping surround sound and high-impact bass. Dolby Pro Logic II generates 5.1-channel signals from any stereo source, so even if you're listening to one of the receiver's 30 preset radio stations, you can still listen in discrete, multichannel surround sound. Each of the five satellite speakers (left, center, right, and left/right surround) receives 30 watts, and the 6-inch subwoofer gets a generous 50 watts. A built-in FM/AM tuner lets you listen to the radio with drift-free PLL tuning, and a headphone jack affords private listening. The system comes with a handy remote control for operation from the comfort of your viewing position. Aspect-ratio selection control lets you configure the system for either 16:9 widescreen TVs or standard 4:3 sets, and composite- and S-video outputs accommodate most TVs. The problem is a simple setting that the manual doesn't cover. After the fix, the product works great, but I must give rating of 3 because of the DVD screw up. I have only used this product for a short time, but was irritated by the fact that it does not play many DVD's straight from the box. Otherwise I would give the product a 4 or 5 for ease of setup and use and it performs the way I'd expect a lower cost unit to perform. It took only a minute to fix once connected with the help people. If it doesn't play some DVD's, call the number. The "not formatted for this region" problem can be fixed by calling the service number for zenith products on the back of the owners manual.
I get a message that says this disc not formatted for this region, but it plays in the $49 DVD player I bought today. Glad I saved the box. Good to know ahead of time. I really liked the ease of set up and the compact size of the machine, but guess what, IT WON'T PLAY MANY DVD'S. There is currently no recall so I will have to do battle with one of the big electronic stores to try to get my money back.
I wasted $5.00 on a rental-only to find it didn't play. According to "LG" Customer Service, "the engineers are working on it but they don't know when the upgrade will be available. Go Zenith. I found some discs play while others do not. This is a problem when renting videos, not knowing if it will play. This home theater system may not play region 1 dvds.
I bought it for my girlfriend's birthday present and she has been satisfied with it. The components are all fairly light-weight, the inputs are labeled clearly and it was a breeze to set up. Its thin and has hardly any differentiation in button size, so good luck even turning down the volume in the dark (yes, the volume button is the same size and shape as all the others). The bass is shallow and unrefined, and the speakers are unremarkable as well, but you must keep in mind what you are buying.
Considering your first DVD player probably cost nearly as much as this unit, its a heck of a deal. This is a bargain priced low-end 5.1 DVD receiver. It doesnt have many bells and whistles, but it has inputs for your cable box and VCR, which is probably all you'll be looking to plug into it at this price range. This is the kind of piece that is appropriate for somebody who is looking to replace an old stereo, NOT a serious audiophile.
Bottom line, its worth the money. As for the sound, it is best described as adequate. My only real complaint was the remote. This is the only place that the system feels genuinely cheap.
