Zoombinis Logical Journey
Travel to a remarkable new world and treat your brain to an outlandishly fun and challenging adventure. Diabolical Bloats have seized Zoombini Isle, and it will take a clever mind to help the Zoombinis navigate their way to safety. Standing between you and your destination are twelve perilous puzzles, with four levels of difficulty each. But beware, this is no ordinary challenge. Zoombinis' captivating gameplay features math without numbers. Solving Zoombinis puzzles uses the process of mathematical thinking. This process includes organizing information, reasoning with evidence, and testing systematically. Dive into the exciting and wacky world of the Zoombinis and develop information-age logic skills used in writing computer programs, organizing spreadsheet data, and searching for information on computer networks.
"Not too long ago, Zoombinis enjoyed the good life. Though they all looked slightly different--different eyes, noses, hair, feet--such differences meant nothing to the Zoombinis. And so they lived happily on Zoombini Isle, making small, useful products, which were prized the world over." So begins an unsuspectingly addictive CD-ROM, featuring uncommonly fun reasoning games that require serious problem solving and math-thinking work. Yet the perils that face this cheerful society are not as fearsome as the amount of time you'll potentially spend on this pursuit. Beware the chubby, chattering Zoombinis if you don't want to get hooked to your computer for at least 90 minutes a session! Adored by educators and parents alike, Zoombinis Logical Journey challenges children to employ such basic fundamentals of mathematical thinking as organizing information, reasoning of evidence, finding and making patterns, and systematic testing of hypotheses. The journey follows four puzzle-filled trails, each exploring related mathematical ideas. The fundamental data and variables for all this work are the variations in the Zoombinis' features. Their "feet," for example, can be shoes, skates, whirligigs, or coiled springs (the sound effects for these items are particularly great), while their "eyes" may be heavily lidded, enhanced by eyeglasses, blocked by dark shades, or limited to just a single eyeball. Sorting and arranging these variables in order to solve puzzles requires concentrated effort from the players, and the game rewards them well with inventive scenarios that evolve in fabulously curious ways as skills are gained. This may not sound like much, but when Arno the Pizza-Eating Tree Troll, who has been yammering for the perfectly topped pizza his entire lifetime, suddenly demands a perfectly topped ice cream sundae, too, it is a staggering, giddy surprise. The product is full of so many little joys, it's hard to demand improvements. Still, it'd be a great thing if version 2 would feature something other than the monotonous, ping-ping-ping soundtrack that's featured here. But that's minor. In the end, the creators' promise that this CD-ROM will "encourage kids to develop a lifetime habit of associating fun with learning" is dead-on. (Ages 9 and older) --Jean Lenihan

On the plus. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of two small flaws:. This makes it harder to have her stop. - you can't stop the game and save it at each level, you have. when it is time to go to bed / go to school / etc.
sake, please make games easy to save at any point. - getting all the zombini's forward is a bit repetitive. becomes adept at solving the logical puzzles. And I like it, too, because it is teaching her some logical reasoning in an entertaining setting. Nice game.
to get through a few. For the parent's. My 8-year-old daughter loves this. side, though, this does make sure she really learns the lessons and.
The software just crashed AGAIN a moment ago. Unfortunately, I bought it for my children. Then you need to wait technical support to reply your trouble ticket. This is the worst software I've ever used. "Zoombinis Logical Journey.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. It claims compatible to Windows XP, but it doesn't say it wasn't developed for XP. I am an IT professional, but I can't "support" this software for my children, with the company's technical support.
It only supports low resolution (640 x 480) monitor. We are sorry for the inconvenience.". It doesn't have technical support on the phone, only through a website, you need to login and type in all kind of issues yourself. Basically, the software is not stable, it keeps giving error such as. So if you have big, high resolution monitor, it shows a few inches little square on your big monitor.
We learned a lot about logic, and we learned that we have different learning styles. Gil Steil My five year old grandson and I have had a wonderful time playing with this game. I have no experience with the 2001 version. The 2005 version which I got from Amazon (see separate listing) has a Mac OS X installer which installed this game flawlessly in less than a minute.
I tried to uninstall and install again, nothing changes. I have to return the CD. I wish I have read these 1 star comments before I purchase this CD. It is really disappointed experience. I received 2001 version (have they ever updated). It doesn't work on my 2004 (XP) computer. After installing, I click "play", it ruined my computer setting and disappeared.
We even bought a new copy when our old one broke. He loves it. We can't quite get a full set of zoombinis through on those last levels. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that it would have been helpful to have hints for the last level of puzzles. Other than that, it's a lot of fun. My ten year old has been playing this game since he was 5. I even play by myself sometimes, the puzzles are that fun.
